How Umberto went from “fat and all the time injured” to be one of the elite Personal Trainers Eastbourne has to offer
The simple steps he took to get fit and healthy now available to those willing to make the changes.
Who is Umberto Massimino?
Just who is this Umberto Massimino guy? No, he’s not a model, or a steroid junkie. He’s a fit, focused, fully qualified personal trainer based in Eastbourne. But that’s now...
The younger Umberto
Growing up in Italy, Umberto was your typical, out-of-shape young man. Overlooked by the ladies and mocked by the jocks, his confidence suffered and he secretly dreamt of having an amazing body with a solid six-pack. The dream slipped further out of reach when he moved to London in 2007 and hopped on to the work-hard/play harder treadmill of long hours and full-on socializing.
When did he get into personal training?
By mid-2013, Umberto felt heavy, overweight, lethargic, flabby. In short, too much pasta and not enough exercise had turned him into a seriously fat boy(more Antonio Carluccio than Gino D'Acampo)! A vague interest in weight training began to grow as he tried to shape up, but then things changed – big time. On 8 October 2013, Umberto broke his left shoulder in a motorbike accident. His rehabilitation included weekly sessions with a physio, but this made for slow progress and Umberto wanted to get back to normal – ASAP. He made friends with the gym and repeated his physiotherapy exercises five times a week. It worked. His muscles started firing again and six months after the accident he had recovered 90% of the function in his shoulder and arm.
Body transformation
But Umberto had another problem to solve. The medics said lifting weights would be painful, but he still wanted to get fitter. Determined, he researched every fitness program out there and discovered the high-intensity workout (HIIT) method, based mainly on body-weight exercises. He studied the movements closely and practiced them meticulously at the gym. The results were incredible! He lost 8kg in the first month alone. Then he tackled his diet, reducing carbs and taking a more balanced approach to nutrition. He lost the fat, built muscle definition and found his inner six-pack. The women took notice, and Umberto’s confidence soared. A year after his accident, he had developed a positive attitude to exercise, nutrition and life in general (and got a girlfriend! Yay!). In 2015, he decided to become a professional personal trainer.
Nutrition
Being Italian, pasta and pizza had long been the staples of Umberto’s meals, but he slowly learned how to cook quick, tasty nutritionally well-balanced meals that didn’t break the bank or bust the waistband. He still eats pasta, just not all the time!

“Postural strength is the first thing I work on with my clients. The New Era lifestyle is leaving us with a deep scar on the way we move or rest, that’s why our bodies have to forget the wrong habits and replace them with the good ones"
"If it is not safe, i will not let my clients touch the weights”
